My two requirements for a continued investment in Twitter as a speculative portion of my portfolio is that it expands the length of tweets and it adds in a feed which organizes information based off of an algorithm. There have been rumors of both occurring, but based off of reports from Recode it looks like expanded tweets could come as soon as the end of the month as Twitter has been working on this change since September. The use of 10,000 word tweets will allow Twitter to combat Apple News and Facebook Instant Articles. Twitter is behind the curve on this initiative since those products have been out for months. While Twitter is behind the curve, most journalists still use Twitter heavily, so it should be easy for them to start posting on Twitter. Twitter often gives traffic to other websites as articles include tweets, which doesn't earn Twitter any money. Tweets link to articles which take you off Twitter. Finally with 10,000 word tweets, Twitter will have content which users come to see. It will encourage users to create accounts to read this content every day. As a blogger, I use Twitter as my own personal blog because it easier to gain a following on it than any other medium. I will expand my use of Twitter when this product is rolled out.
